History and Social Studies is the name of a subject taught in Austria.
General
This subject is taught from the 5th grade of the Hauptschule. Contents of it are already taught in elementary school, but not as an individual subject.
The combination of this subjects was created at secondary levels I and II from 1962 in the course of the reorganization of the Austrian school system. At that time, together with “History and Social Studies”, “Geography and Economic Studies” was defined as a double-pole centerpiece in a constitutional law. The background to this change in direction was the efforts to anchor socio-scientific content in the general education system, but not to increase the number of subjects. Later came as a third combination “Biology and Environmental Science”. Since 2008, the subject has been given an additional accent by the addition “History and Social Studies / Political Education”.
